Isabella Stewart Gardner built her museum as a Venetian palazzo around a glass-roofed courtyard, arranging the collection herself and forbidding it from ever being rearranged. Paintings by Titian, Rembrandt, and Vermeer hang amid tapestries, furniture, and manuscripts across three floors. Empty frames still mark the works taken in the unsolved 1990 theft, the largest in art history.
