Venice
The Doge's Palace was the seat of the Venetian Republic for centuries, combining the doge's residence, the council chambers, the law courts, and the prisons in one Gothic complex on the lagoon. Its Great Council Chamber holds Tintoretto's vast Paradise, and the Bridge of Sighs leads to the cells beyond. Gilded staircases and painted ceilings glorify the Republic at its height.
