Housed in the only major building surviving from the 1893 World's Fair, the museum—renamed for benefactor Kenneth Griffin—fills a vast Beaux-Arts hall with hands-on exhibits on engineering, transport, and industry. Its centerpiece is U-505, a German submarine captured intact in 1944, shown in an underground gallery. A simulated coal mine and a working model railroad have drawn visitors for decades.
