London
Sir John Soane's Museum preserves the house of the architect of the Bank of England, left to the nation on the condition that nothing be changed. Its rooms are crammed with antiquities, casts, and paintings, including Hogarth's A Rake's Progress and the alabaster sarcophagus of the pharaoh Seti I. Mirrors, coloured glass, and top-lit voids make the small house feel boundless.
