Rome
Castel Sant'Angelo began as the cylindrical mausoleum of the emperor Hadrian and became a papal fortress, prison, and refuge linked to the Vatican by a covered passage. A spiral ramp climbs past papal apartments to a terrace with sweeping views over Rome. It takes its name from a vision of the Archangel Michael.
