New York City
The African Burial Ground National Monument marks the site where an estimated fifteen thousand free and enslaved Africans were buried in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, rediscovered during construction in 1991. A granite memorial and an indoor visitor center interpret the excavation and the lives it uncovered. It is the earliest and largest known African burial ground in North America.
