The Domus Aurea was the sprawling golden palace the emperor Nero built after the fire of AD 64, later buried beneath the baths of Trajan. Guided visits descend into the frescoed and vaulted rooms, including the octagonal hall, with virtual reality reconstructing the lost halls. Its painted grottoes gave the word grotesque to art.
