Rome
The Capitoline Museums, on the Michelangelo-designed Piazza del Campidoglio, are considered the world's oldest public museums, founded in 1471. They hold the bronze she-wolf of Rome, the Dying Gaul, and the original equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius, alongside a picture gallery. The buildings frame the heart of the ancient Capitoline Hill.
