The DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center, founded in 1961, is among the oldest institutions in the country dedicated to African American history and culture. Named for Jean Baptiste Point DuSable, the Haitian-born founder of Chicago, it holds art, artifacts, and an archive on the Black experience in the city and beyond. The museum occupies a Beaux-Arts building in Washington Park.
