London
The Whitechapel Gallery, founded in 1901 in the East End, has long brought modern and contemporary art to a broad public; it showed Picasso's Guernica in Britain in 1939. It mounts changing exhibitions without a permanent collection of its own. The Arts and Crafts building remains a landmark on Whitechapel High Street.
