The Museo dell'Ara Pacis was built by Richard Meier to shelter the Altar of Augustan Peace, dedicated in 9 BC to mark the peace Augustus brought to the empire. The marble altar, carved with processions of the imperial family, stands in a glass-walled pavilion by the Tiber. It was the first new building in Rome's historic centre in decades.
