Venice
Torcello, a thinly populated island in the northern lagoon, was the cradle of Venice, settled before the city itself and once home to thousands. Its Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, founded in 639, holds Byzantine mosaics including a towering Last Judgment. Archaeological excavations and a small museum trace the lost settlement around the ancient church.
