Rome
The Palatine Hill, where Rome was said to have been founded, holds the ruins of the imperial palaces that gave the word palace its name. The remains of the Domus Augustana and the House of Augustus, with its painted rooms, crown the hill above the Forum. The Farnese Gardens were laid out over the ruins in the sixteenth century.
