Rome
The Colosseum, the Flavian Amphitheatre completed in AD 80, is the largest amphitheatre ever built, seating tens of thousands for gladiatorial games. The arena floor is partly reconstructed above the hypogeum, the warren of tunnels and cages beneath. It remains the enduring emblem of imperial Rome.
