The National Museum of African American History and Culture, opened in 2016 in a bronze-clad building on the Mall, documents the African American experience from slavery to the present. The history galleries descend below ground and rise through the era of segregation toward culture and community above. Architect David Adjaye drew the building's tiered crown from a Yoruba sculptural form.
