
Vienna
The Secession building, completed in 1898 with its dome of gilded laurel leaves, was raised by artists who broke from Vienna's academic establishment. It remains an artist-run exhibition hall, with contemporary shows above and Gustav Klimt's Beethoven Frieze installed permanently below. The motto over the entrance declares to each age its art, to art its freedom.
