St. Mark's Basilica, consecrated to hold the relics of the evangelist, is a Byzantine church of five domes sheathed inside in golden mosaics. The Pala d'Oro, an altarpiece of gold and enamel set with thousands of gems, stands behind the high altar. The four bronze horses above the entrance, looted from Constantinople in 1204, are replicas; the originals are kept within.
