Washington
The Phillips Collection, opened in 1921, was the first museum of modern art in the United States, set in the founder's former home near Dupont Circle. Its signature work is Renoir's Luncheon of the Boating Party, hung among paintings by Bonnard, Rothko, and Klee. The intimate domestic galleries distinguish it from the larger institutions on the Mall.
